Hi Guys,

Below is my current setup:

AMD A4-5300
Deepcool Gammaxx 200
Gigabyte GA-F2A68HM-S1
Sapphire R7 250X 1GB DDR5
Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB DDR3 1866MHz
Seagate 250GB + 500GB HDD
FSP Hexa+ 550
Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
Cooler Master K280

I usually just play LOL and download/consume media using my PC.

Last week has been a pain for me, as I noticed that my PC boots & loads very, very slow. There are some instances wherein the "BOOTMGR is missing Press Ctrl +alt + Del to restart" appears, and I had to disconnect/connect the SATA cable and restart in order to boot properly.

Given this, I am thinking that the culprit here is the hard drive, and I am thinking of buying a new one.

Questions:
1. Is it better if I buy 1 hard drive with a bigger storage space (atleast 1TB)? or
2. Buy an SSD for the OS and another HDD to store my games/media?

What are the pros & cons for both choices?

Thanks!

Hi, jm05b.

It does sound like there's an issue with your OS drive. I'd suggest that you backup all the important data which you might have on it, just to be on the safe side. After that you could download the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tool and test the drive for errors and bad sectors, to see what's the situation with it.
If you're set on getting a new drive, the SSD + HDD combo is the best choice nowadays by far, in terms of both performance and storage capacity. Having your OS on the SSD will greatly increase the performance of your system due to the SSD's faster speeds and access time, while having the rest your data along with the games on your HDD. Basically you could put a few games on the SSD if they have a lot of in-game...

Having your OS on the SSD will greatly increase the performance of your system due to the SSD's faster speeds and access time, while having the rest your data along with the games on your HDD. Basically you could put a few games on the SSD if they have a lot of in-game loading screens which take forever to load, but I don't think you'll need to write LOL on the SSD. The only downside is that it would be a bit more expensive than the other option.
As for getting one large drive (I'll assume that you'll be using your remaining healthy HDD as the OS drive) is also not a bad option. More budget friendly than the SSD + HDD combo, but unfortunately no performance boost whatsoever, which is not necessarily a bad thing if this is not something that you're looking for.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi there jm05b,

Best option for me (and the one I use in my build) use an SSD for your OS let’s say 250GB will be enough to storage your OS and some games if you want to reduce loading times, then use a mechanical HDD like you say 500GB/1TB or so for mass storage.
I´ll recommend you the Samsung EVO 250GB is more than enough for what you want, it has a great performance and a great price.

Cons of the first choice, you won’t see any improvement in loading times (trust me once you use an SSD you wont use a mechanical drive for your OS never again :)
