Doing my head in over such a simple decision.
Which one is better for 1080p gaming:
Gigabyte AMD Radeon RX 480 G1 Gaming 4GB Video Card AUD$293.70
OR
Gigabyte N1060WF2OC-3GD 3G GTX 1060 WINDFORCE OC PCI-E VGA Card AUD$289

[Edit: I picked these 2 cards as they are about the cheapest on staticice]

Both local pickup stores in Sydney.

Please help before my head explodes.

[Edit: cheapest 6gb GTX 1060 is a Galax at $349, so not that good value (bang for buck)]

Heyo eHammer

Those cards are pretty much the same. Although I'd say you should go for the 1060 6GB model instead, since that card is abit more beefy.
But go for the cheaper one, 1060 in this case, and be happy with it :)

Cheers

Ah, but look what happens with a weak CPU:

At 1080p both should be equivalent. The choice should be made based on the type of variable refresh supported by the monitor OP has or is likely to buy.

the 1060 3gb not only has less vram but is also internally neutered

the 480 4gb is going to be quite a bit faster

1) Since July, AMD has improved the RX 480's performance by 6-8% in many games thanks to their newest Crimson drivers.
2) That test is not an RX 480 4GB vs. GTX 1060 3GB. It's an RX 480 8GB vs. GTX 1060 6GB.

As may be, but they are still equivalent enough at 1080p, with better fps on the 480 vs. lower frame times on the 1060 3GB. I would buy the 480 because it's $200 cheaper when the monitor is factored in. It's also likely longer lasting because as you pointed out, AMD are better at improving their drivers over time (as opposed to intentionally hobbling 2yo cards with new drivers) and because AMD is just better at DX12

Thanks everyone for all the excellent info.
Amazing how complicated such a simple thing can get.

Anyway, I got an amazing bargain on a Gainward GTX 1060 3gb AUD $257, so I went with that (and the shop staff said go with the 1060 over the 480 as it's a better card).
