So right now my budger can only afford the acer gn246hl black and I was wondering if my pairing would be okay for max settings for games like overwatch, battlefield 1 and 4, the division, paragon, csgo. Thanks

Smart idea, trust me I tried to wait myself but once I realized that the 7700k will still have more powerful single threaded performance which is really important for all gaming, I have no regrets as performance is through the roof, always over 100+ FPS and for some reason I only like really demanding games (not on purpose just the way it works out for me).

A 1070 system like mine with a really good CPU could probably out game some 1080 systems that made the wrong CPU choice, that's why everyone is pushing the i7, at the high end it really matters. Saving some $ on CPU but having your GPU perform $200 less fast is what needs to be feared and avoided.

Going back to your list, only BF1 and TC:TD are demanding. BF1 does benefit from i7...

1080 is a total overkill for battlefield 1, 4 and cs go especially, don't know about other, never played them, if I were you I'd get a 1070 and get a decent monitor, 1070 can shred through those games, 1080 is more for 4k

Thing is I already have the gtx 1080. My friend gave it to me and I really don't have to pay for it for now. Should I just get an i7 6700 if I'm planning 1080p 144hz?

So yeah I think I'll be getting the acer gn246hl black with 144hz. But I'm still skeptical about going with the i5 7500 or i7 6700. Thing with i7 is the price.

HT rarely makes a difference in gaming, though it might start to help more as DX12 becomes more widely used and taken advantage of. That may take a few years. But if you are able to get an i7 6700 at the same cost as the i5 7500, go with the 6700.

The speed of the CPU, more so on the single threaded speed, matters most for 144 FPS, though you don't have to always hit 144 FPS to make the 144hz monitor worth using.

I see. Yeah I think I've read that HT isn't really used in gaming. But for now the price of an i7 6700 or 7700 is too high for me. The extra $100 can be just for something else. But right now I think my best bet is i5 7500. I don't really need straight up 144fps. I just want to get 60 or more smooth fps. I just read too that with 1080p 60hz the i5 will hold back the gtx 2080

I don't want to sell the 1080. Was given by a friend almost free. He'd kill me if I sell it. Maybe I can wait for Ryzen? I've been researching about them and the Ryzen 5 1600x is on par with the i7 6800k on benchmarks and it's only priced the same as an i5 7600k which is 250

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking at the 7700 or 7700k as an option right now. But with the Ryzen around the corner and seeing that it may be good, I guess I'll wait until they get released and from there I'll see. Thanks!!

Division had the least improvement from the 1070 on old CPU to 1070 on new CPU (still 20fps more all the time and no dips at all on new system, old system would dip into the 50's 40's FPS in certain areas).
