Hello,

my GPU is failing when playing games, the pc just freezes up and it gives me a black screen and i have to hard reset. When I undecrlock the GPU in Wattman to around 900MHZ it doesnt crash anymore. Increasing/Decreasing the voltage on the GPU doesnt change anything. Before getting this card I ran a r9 380 without any issues. The system was stable. Now what I noticed is that the GPU starts to squeal terribly loud as soon as I clock it around 1000MHZ. The GPU is supposed to go up to 1305MHZ. I am thinking about ordering a new PSU, but im really not sure whether this will solve the issue. I feel like the problem lays within the GPU?

it usually crashes within a minute so temps are low as hell, around 60°C. fans are working properly. as soon as i go byeond 1000mhz on the core clock in wattman the gpu fails, very odd behavior.

PSU's deteriorate over time. I wouldn't use a 10 year old high end unit on a new system, when PSU's fail they can damage other components and failures can occur with no warning.

That said I think your problem might be a faulty cooler or cooling fan from your description.

as i said fans are working properly. temps are fine. but what i have on my mind is that the rx480 might be a tad more sensitive to 12V deterioration since its 14nm and that might be the issue. i ordered a new psu just now from the same online shop. if it doesnt happen to fix the issue im sending both back and getting a sapphire card.

Tagan doesn't exist anymore. They went under around 7 years ago. On some of their models they cheaped out on the capacitor quality.

The high pitched whining, from the graphics card, is most likely coming from the card's VRM circuit as power draw increases when the GPU clock is raised.

Test the graphics card with the new PSU. If you still get a high pitched squeal from the graphics card then replace the graphics card.

Radeon WattMan has been known to crash frequently.

Ordered the PSU yesterday, arrived today (great speed, no special delivery either). It turned out the PSU was fine. The GPU is faulty as installing the new PSU didnt fix the problem. The high pitched whining is still there and the crashes still happen. I am still gonna keep the new PSU because the old one was being very loud already due to age. Also I want to minimize the risk of the old PSU failing anytime soon and taking out my components. lol No more ASUS for me. I had a Sapphire card before and it worked like a charm, gonna stick to Sapphire.
