Do you not care about retro gaming as much as I do? Just bought a gold controller from Japan. Also I have bought an official controller pak. Never had one before. Now my console is running at super speed! Anybody that doesn't own a N64, should! You don't know what you're missing! Retro Gamers Rule!

I loved that console but I had higher hopes before it was released.
1. The graphics... Many years back I had a subscription to Nintendo Power Mag. They showed pictures and seemed to make claims of graphics on the level of the Nintendo GameCube. I was very disappointed by the graphics.
2. The controller... NES good, SNES better, N64 the train de-railed and never got back on track.

I dunno about the console itself, which had some bust elements, but the games were amazing and regularly in top 10 lists of all time. Mario 64 and Zelda Ocarina of Time were mind blowing, possibly being the first true non-linear, open-world games. I remember blasting myself in a canon with wing cap right over enemies to the mission objective and thinking "damn, I can do anything I want with a little creativity". It was total liberation. Everything had character, even the menu had character and this crazy world of painting where every level was an artistic creation. That's when Nintendo had insanity and spirit, audacious enough to make a midget Italian plumber their brand icon because it was silly and personal to the developer. They don't have that kind of spunk anymore, and mixed with their historic ignorance about hardware trends and progression, makes for the situation they are currently in. That new Mario game looks okay, except it's basically a rehashed Mario 64 but ripped from a vibrant colorful castle and placed in a hum glum modern city world. It's a perfect metaphor for Nintendo's current situation, and totally, utterly sad. But, yeah, I'll raise one to the good 'ole days.
