So a friend of mine has a custom built computer. An i5 6600k.

Recently he came home after putting it to sleep to find out that it no longer boots. We assumed it was the power supply. We replaced it, and still nothing happens. We then checked the ram, and it was fine. So we replaced the motherboard. We got an MSI H110M Gaming motherbaord. Now the motherboard powers on and fans will spin. However, the CPU fan will not spin at all. Even in the fan headers we KNOW work. Not only that, but the CPU itself is not being detected and we are getting the EZ debug CPU led coming on. We tried resetting CMOS. Nothing different. We tried moving RAM to another slot. Still nothing. We are not getting power to ANY SATA devices at all. I am at a total loss right now. So here is a summary of what we know:

  • - Motherbaord Powers On
    - Fans Spin, except for the CPU fan
    - CPU is not detected by the motherbaord
    - It appears the RAM is detected as the light for the RAM is not illuminated
    - The CPU fan will not work on any fan header, even though other fans do
    - The GPU (GTX 1050) powers on and its fans spin
    - Clearing the CMOS did nothing.
    - All cables were checked and reset to be sure

This all happened after a brief power outage

If I can think of any other information regarding this I will update as necessary.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Solution
As rare as it would be, it does seem like a dead CPU. The CPU fan not working on any header at all is confusing, though. On another non-CPU header, it should just be treated like a case fan and work, regardless, since other fans connected to those same headers work. I have no explanation for that.

Yes, the fact that the CPU fan, which is, in fact, just a fan - that it doesn't work on any header at all is very confusing. We know its not a motherboard fan header problem. I assume something is wrong with the fan itself. Would the CPU not beign detected and the PC not booting cause the SATA devices to not be powered (or at least not reach that stage in the booting process?)

That's a good question and confusing, as well. You've already replaced the two things I could think of that would cause that (PSU and mobo). Like the fan, the SATA devices should get power, no matter what, as far as I've ever known. Power to SATA should have nothing to do with the CPU (or even the motherboard).

That's what I thought as well. I already know the motherboard and the PSU were bad. So that wasn't in vain. Because we tried the old PSU with the new motherboard and get nothing at all. And the old motherboard wouldn't even power on with the new power supply. So is it possible that (along with the old Mobo and CPU AND PSU) that the SATA devices could have been fried as well?
