I've finally decided to build my first dedicated PC gaming machine. Not my first PC build, but it's like starting over again because so much has changed. My question is in reference to video card selection. For reference, the motherboard that I'm using for this build, is my MSI H110M Gaming LGA 1151 Intel H110.

Goals for this build: I want a gaming machine that will play the vast majority of games currently available at the highest settings possible while offering a noticeable improvement over console gaming in terms of on screen graphics and smoother gameplay. For example, my favorite game and the first that I will buy on this machine is Grand Theft Auto 5. I want to play this game, as well as, all other currently available games at 1440p on ultra settings, is possible with smooth gameplay. I also want to play Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands when it comes out.

These are the video cards that I'm considering. Please note that I haven't picked a CPU because I'm waiting until I purchase a video card so that I can choose the best CPU for that video card. Most likely I'll go with an i7.

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming 8GB PCIe Video Card

MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING Z DirectX 12 8G 8GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support ATX Video Card

MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X 8GB GDDR5 PCIe Video Card

MSI GeForce GTX 1070 ARMOR 8GB Overclocked PCIe Video Card

In an effort to maintain some parts matching and brand myopia, I would like to match my MSI gaming motherboard with a MSI video card. Which video card would you choose and why would you choose it?

As i can see you are solid on msi and thats great. The only thing you should know is that Gaming x is overclocked and has 3 differents clock options + boost via afterburner. Gaming z is the overclocked version of gaming x and has the same options , but more core clocks , meaning better performance (not huge difference, but still better) . So if the budget is not a problem , go for Msi gaming z .
Compare gaming x and gaming z:
X : https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/GEFORCE-GTX-1070-GAMING-X-8G.html#hero-specification
Z : https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/GeForce-GTX-1070-GAMING-Z-8G.html#hero-specification

Thanks for the reply. I do have a budget for this build, not to exceed 1000.00 USD. I don't mind paying a bit more for a video card if it will give me a substantially noticeable difference, but based on some of the comparisons that I've been reading, they are advising that there's pretty much no big difference between different brands of GTX 1070 cards.

My local computer store has a deal going for an MSI GTX 1070 ARMOR 8GB card for $399.99, and the Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 8GB card for $404.99. The only difference that I can tell between them in terms of performance specs, is that the MSI GTX 1070 ARMOR 8GB has a core clock speed of 1556MHz and a boast core clock speed of 1746 MHz, while the Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 8GB card has a core clock speed of 1620 MHz and a boast core clock speed of 1822 MHz. But I don't know if the faster speed of the Gigabyte card will offer me any noticeable difference in graphics and gameplay over the slower speed of the MSI card. I don't know, something tells me that I'm not gaining anything with any one GTX 1070 card over the other, so I should go with whatever GTX 1070 has the cheaper price and put that extra money saved towards a i7 CPU.

Both cards come with Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands for free!.

Its more about your style . I always choose the best numbers (if the products are almost equal) cause why not the 10 dollar difference is not a problem.

My opinion is Gaming z > gaming x < g1 < armor
if g1 is coming with tom clancys go for it

Thank you. I ordered the MSI Gaming Z last week. It came out to $383.00 USD so I think that was a good deal.
