144hz at 1024x768 HDMI

So basically i have a laptop and i wanna buy an 144hz monitor for playing CS:GO. The laptop only has one HDMI port. I have heard that HDMI only supports up to 60hz on 1080p. BUT the thing is that i do not wanna play CS:GO 1920x1080. I play CS:GO 1024x768 (with black bars on the sides). So the question is: Can a 144hz monitor do full 144hz at 1024x768?

Would need to know exactly which brand and model that screen is.

The monitor is Acer 24" Predator GN246HL. If HDMI does not support 144hz is it possible to use a DVI to HDMI cable to get 144hz..?

I'm afraid that you're stuck at 60Hz as this is all that your laptop will be capable of since it only has a HDMI output.
A converter in this case I don't think will work.

Wait a minute... I just read some HDMI shit on wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI and there it says that HDMI 1.4b supports 120hz. Am I missing something here or can I atleast get 120hz if 144hz is not possible?

Check if your laptop and display have 1.4b ports. If they do, you're good to go.
