Hi everyone,

Hope you can help - The graphics card in my HP Pavilion 500-260ea has packed up where the PC goes sraight into sleep mode on boot up. Unable to get to BIOS, boot into safe mode as there is no display at any point during boot up. Tried with HMDI, DVI, VGA, display port and have also tested with 3 different monitors.

Anyhow, I've phoned HP and they will repair for £140. I would like to resolve this for cheaper than £140 if I can. The graphics card is an nVidia GeForce GTX 645 which has been discontinued and I cannot find one anywhere online. I'm unsure what other graphics card I can buy as a replacement, so I'm reaching out to you guys for some advice! Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Chantelle

The problem might not be the graphics card. HP have been known to use cheap parts in their rigs and I've seen this problem before with HP computers with no display. In a lot of cases, the problem was bad RAM, bad Motherboard or bad Power Supply. I'd recommend getting a technician to check it or do some tests yourself if you want to. If the problem does turn out to be the graphics card, you could get one of these which would be cheaper than £140.

The GTX 750Ti is the cheapest and performs great and I'd recommend it as I have one myself. If you needed more power then I'd recommend the RX 460 although you'd need a good enough CPU and I wouldn't be so sure what HP have put in that rig. If you didn't need much power you could go with a GTX 650 but it's the most expensive and oldest so I wouldn't recommend it over the other two.
