"modern games at 1080p with 40-60 fps"

Modern games use CPU power almost as much as they use GPU power. You have an older, slower dual core when modern games typically are made with quad cores in mind. I suggest an AMD RX 460 2gb videocard. They work better with older motherboards than the new Nvidia cards and don't draw a lot of power. You'll be able to run most games at 1080p 30fps or higher on low to medium settings depending on the game. Some less demanding games will run even better and with high settings. It's a good match for your CPU and 4gb of system ram. I don't think it's worth spending more on a videocard for this system.

8 gb of ram

an i7 860 or i5 760

and a gtx 1050 ti

to meet your fps goals at 1080p

yes, if your power supply is good enough

but you cant just get a gpu and expect good fps... good luck

if you cant upgrade anything else, just go with a rx 460 or gtx 750 ti - Make sure they are versions that do NOT need 6-pin pcie power cables
