Is a recovery partition and EFI system partition necessary?

After formatting a new hdd, I noticed I had an EFI system partition and recovery partition on my PNY 240gb ssd (my boot drive). Looking around, I don't see people having this. Should I get rid of these partitions? They are empty and take up capacity for no reason. Is there a point to them or no?
