Ok so I'm having some trouble diagnosing a problem with my PC is, so I was on my computer and then a strange burning smell emerges from my PC and then it just shuts off as if the power had been turned off. So I try and turn the computer on but it's not responsive when I press the power button. So I open the case and switch the PSU switch on and off and press the power button and the power button shows it's blue light and the fan on the CPU's heat sync turns and then stops along with the light on the power button. Also when I turn the switch on the PSU the light on the motherboard lights up but when the power button is pressed it turns off alongside with the blue light and fan so what has happened here is it my CPU being burnt as the computer looks pretty intact but only that fan spins for a second and the blue light but nothing else so does anyone know what this could be?

It could be a bad PSU, motherboard, CPU or finally the GPU. You should start by testing your system with another reliable PSU. Borrow one from a friend if you don't have a spare one available. If your system doesn't work with the new PSU then you should take your system to a repair/service shop, since you don't have a spare motherboard or CPU in order to continue the testing procedure.

Also post your complete system specs. It may help us give you more advice. Finally the fact that the PSU seems to provide power, doesn't mean that it isn't damaged. In fact it's the most probable suspect, unless it is a very cheap unit that somehow didn't offer enough electrical protection for your system components. In that case I'm afraid that your...

In that case I'm afraid that your board, CPU or even the GPU are probably dead.

EDIT. You could also remove the GPU from your system. If it works then your GPU is dead.

Well I am sending my computer back to the company I bought it off as I have a warranty as I cannot do any of that testing but something that I think helps is that the burnt smell is quite stronger near the PSU then anywhere else. Anyways thanks for the advice on this I really appreciate the help you have given me.
