I don't heavily use software like I plan, but I figure that maybe the i5 will be better for me.

Thoughts and opinions?

I mostly game, I rarely do video rendering, and when I do, i do it while away from the pc.

I currently own a fx 8150, so I am very curious about getting the i5 over the i7.

i7 is by far superior, hyperthreading is just needed nowa days IMO, at least for my use of gaming while web browsing, discord, music etc all at the same time. an i5 is a perfect CPU just for gaming though. Overall either an i5 or an i7 will be a HUGE upgrade from the FX series.

Maybe wait for Ryzen benchmarks to come out though? They could be rather good and maybe worth even going for Ryzen instead of intel, One thing is for sure though if Ryzen is as good as anticipated then Intel CPU's will have to drop in prices. I'd say wait and see what happens :)
