Few questions about the i5-6400

Hello, so the i5-6400 has a decent price difference between the i5-6500 and the i5-7400, which are identical and I personally was going to go with the i5-7400, until I saw the price difference in local stores.

I was first put off by the 2.7GHz but then it hit me, the benchmarks I saw where there was a good amount of difference in FPS and performance, they were using stock speed which is 2.7GHz vs (I5-7400) 3.0GHz, now it shows that the i5-6400 can be boosted to 3.3GHz so that's wonderful, because I can then run it slightly faster than a stock i5-7400 for a cheaper price.

Now, I don't know much about boost/overclocking so to boost my i5-6400 to 3.2GHz, will I need a special motherboard or a CPU cooler? I know you need a Z motherboard to overclock K series CPUs and a better CPU cooler but is boosting different? If it is, can you tell me how and if I can keep it at a consistent 3.0-3.2GHz?

Thank you for any help.

BTW: The motherboard I was planning to go with is the MSI H110M Pro-VD Plus

I know, that's what I mean. I would be very happy with the i5-7400 stock speed that the turbo on the i5-6400 would make me just as happy, rather than be let down.

The price difference is around $40. i5-6500 around $35

Also, what do you exactly mean by automatically? Would I be able to have consistently there while gaming?

Whenever CPU is under heavy load, it boost it's cores as needed. So yes, it is possible to have it consistently while gaming. However, note that actual boost depends on number of cores used. If only one core is heavy used, it gets 0.5 G boost. More cores under load = lesser boost. Also, time of boost may depend on quality of your cooling system.

Price diff between 7400 and 6400 should be ~5$! You live on the end of the world or what :)

Yep I pretty much do, although, rumors are it will drop soon since it's recently released and with Ryzen releasing soon hopefully it reaches around the price of the 6400. I'm planning to unpark all cores so hopefully I get max performance.

One last thing, is the motherboard good for either CPUs? Thank you so much for your help.

Any compatible motherboards should do well (who needs the bells and whistles of the more expensive boards when you don't know how to make up for it?). i5-6400 is one of the few Intel processors that I honestly do not recommend, 2.7 GHz for a desktop chip? I don't think that's bearable (I might have standards set too high though). But, if you're going to chase all the speed and single core power, why not look at the i3s?

Any H110 is just a basic mobo. Assuming it has all you need (USB types, no of ram slots, M.2 etc) it's ok. However, to run 7400, it requires BIOS update, which you can't do yourself without a SkyLake CPU at hand. It's better to make sure it is delivered to you with newest BIOS if you plan for 7400.

Good to know, thanks! You were of much help. Ryzen 7 just came out though, going to certainly be more interesting as soon as Ryzen 5 and 3 are announced.

I do think you have your standards set a bit too high since looking at the game benchmarks the 6400 still performs well so I would say it's a great performance for price CPU. For i3s, 2 cores hold them back imo.

Yup, Ryzen 5 will probably be i5s counterpart and will probably have more cores at similar base clocks - hopefully priced similarly :)

if you're going for gaming you can pick up:
amd:fx-6300(3.5 GHz) and can be overclocked to 4.0GHz or even more
intel:i3-6100(3.5 GHz)
and you can pay the difference and get an i5-6500 you can check it's benchmarks and also tell my about your gpu so I can help you more
