I have been trying to run one 4gb stick of Corsair Vengeance 1866mhz in my Asrock Z77 Extreme4, but it gives me error 55 and it won't boot up. I have tried all 4 slots to no avail. Do I have to get another stick of ram so I can run it in dual channel? If not, what RAM can I get that won't give me the error?

Solution
all that stars from e-bay don't mean a thing , when you buy use its a buyer beware and as is I cant trust it hard enugh to get something first quality to work from a retailer like newegg anymore look at all the posts here at toms on brand new stuff factory sealed ???

''My current idea on what may has happened is that the motherboard was jostled during shipping, because it just came in the retail box with two styrofoam pieces over and under it inside of a larger box.''

thing is ws it new or open box like the guy bought it new and it did not work or failed and he repackaged it back in the factory box and taped it up ??? see ??? then you go back to him and he now claims it damaged by you cause it was working fine when he...
should work with one stick ? did you try a clear cmos ?? may need to do that to clear any old memory used parameters entered in to the bios and let it detect the memory you want to use at its default setting

then if its now detected go and set its xmp

then you may have got a bad stick or its not a compatible memory [rare but happens ]

also be sure its seating in the slot properly some time it can take 2 or 3 tries for it to lock in and make proper contact in the slots

I don't know if I can even make it into the bios, as it restarts after the error shows up and I assume it would just loop indefinitely if left like that. I will try to clear cmos and see what happens.

I was looking at this

5. Some DDR3 1GB double-sided DIMMs with 16 chips may not work on this motherboard. It is not recommended to install them on this motherboard

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/438973/Asrock-Z77-Extreme4.html?page=20#manual

and some on that

http://forum.corsair.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98688

then I don't see where that memory is sold as in a single stick ?? and then some of the review from here show issues

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233142

where did you get this single stick from ??

''I don't know if I can even make it into the bios, as it restarts after the error shows up and I assume it would just loop indefinitely if left like that. I will try to clear cmos and see what happens.''

is this a new build ? or one that was working but now just not working due to the memory ?? put the old memory back in

Mine's working perfectly.
I only had to redo my overclock settings. (3570K)

I got the stick from /r/hardwareswap for $10. It was probably part of some kit but it is 4gb of 1866mhz ddr3. The mobo was also bought used from ebay. Really the only brand new parts were the PSU, cooler, and case. I finished building it yesterday.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been sick with Strep Throat. I tried clearing cmos, but it didn't do anything (Don't know if I did it right, I plugged in PSU, turned PSU on, then pressed clear cmos). The model number for the ram is CMZ8GX3MA1866C9B.

is this new memory ? does your old memory work ? are you using a ''K'' cpu ?

''Don't know if I did it right, I plugged in PSU, turned PSU on, then pressed clear cmos''

should be all covered in your boards manual

pages 35 - 41

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/438973/Asrock-Z77-Extreme4.html?page=43#manual

see on page 43 it shows that dr debug code 55 is memory NOT INSTALLED . be sure your inserting it in there slots correctly and its firmly locked in place [page 20 ]

then I googled that CMZ8GX3MA1866C9B. you must be missing a number in that part number should be a 1 [single stick - 2 [ 2 stick kit] -4 [4 stick''] or 8 . CMZ4GX3M ''2'' A1600C9B = a 2 stick kit for example

so I don't know what to tell you on that deal

I'd check at corsairs site and see if its real corsair memory or some kind of bootleg

http://www.corsair.com/en-us/memory

if it still fails you back on the memory you were using and these sticks got a problem and I guess try another 1866 kit if needed ?

did you buy this memory new ?? cause then 1866 memory from corsair seems only to come in kits not sold a s single ?? [best I see form them ]

Yes, I forgot. The missing number is a 2.

I just built this PC on Monday. The CPU is a 2500k. I bought a new stick of ram (1600mhz 8gb) but that still gives me the error as well.

well you may need to pull the cpu ans see if you may of bent pins in the socket ? make sure the cpu cooler is mounted properly sometimes if too tight or tightened crooked / uneven that could stress/ warp the board and cause these issues ??

[example]
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2714915/ram-issue-cpu-cooler.html

out side of having a bad motherboard or bad CPU ??? where did you get all these parts from , ebay ?? if bought used any one could of been bad to start with [buyer beware kinda thing ?? ]

I have reseated the CPU and cooler - no bent pins to my eyes. The motherboard is pretty straight, although it bent upwards in the bottom left area during installation. Could that have interfered with the slots?

As for where I got all of the parts, I got the CPU from /r/hardwareswap, the motherboard from ebay as mentioned. Everything but the PSU, Case, and Cooler were bought used. All sellers have had positive feedback. The motherboard seller has 195 stars on ebay and the CPU seller has 65 confirmed sales on Reddit.

My current idea on what may has happened is that the motherboard was jostled during shipping, because it just came in the retail box with two styrofoam pieces over and under it inside of a larger box.

unless you picked it all up for $50 bucks and no big deal on being out that little bit of cash ??????

I don't know man , tough call , and I guess all part of buying as you did , high risk
