For gaming at 1080 only (mostly older games) I have options of a single PNY GTX 660 ti 2gb or AMD HD 6950 Twin Frozr in CF. Which would work out better of the two options?

Solution
Big chance of bottlenecking (depending on the game) the CF setup esp. with those CPUs at stock speed. The power requirement/heat would also be an issue with the CF.

If you'd/he'd be gaming in a single 6950 in 1080p with the 860K/880K on AAA games, definitely have to lower in-game settings to get respectable framerates: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw3QqhBfuco.

The better option now is to use the single 660ti instead (will beat the single 6950) with lower power requirements.
HD 6950 CF will beat the single GTX 660Ti.

Just note that RealHardTechX "recommended" PSU wattage for HD 6950 CF is ~700W, while GTX 660Ti is only ~450W, but depending on your other components, you can use slightly lower than what is recommended (esp. with a good quality PSU). Check your PSU if it can handle it.

I have an old 500 fanless (but high quality) PSU with a FM2+ ASUS Ranger MOBO thinking to apply a 880K or a 860K CPU for under $100. This would be a beginning machine for my son. 16 GB @ 1600mhz.
Would the crossfire solution be overkill for this setup?

Thanks...That's what my gut feeling was telling me.
