Usb 3.0 ports not working properly Win 10

Basically my 3.0 usb ports are partially working, meaning only devices such as my mouse and keyboard only work when connected to the 3.0 ports. Anything such as an external hdd or iphone are not being recognized. I've updated my intel chipset drivers and usb 3.0 drivers still no luck. My MB is a Msi b250 mate

Have you checked for a BIOS update? From what I read you plugged the mouse and keyboard into the USB 3.0 ports that were not working with the external drive or iPhone?

yes I have the latest bios update applied. and yes keyboards and mice work fine through the usb 3.0 port, its only external hard drives or anything with storage that's not being recognized through the 3.0 ports

How many different USB devices have you tried that do not work in the 3.0 ports? I would try them on a different computer(if available) just to rule out the possibly of the device failure.
