I have aCooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 500W ATX Power Supply
with a single 6 pin connector. This used to power my Radeon hd 6770, but I just picked up an msi Radeon rx480 Armor, which has a single 8 pin connector.

This card consumes I believe ~150 watts. Will getting a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter give me enough power?

Edit - my CPU is an AMD Phenom 2 4x 975 3.6 ghz

Here is what PC Part Picker said about the output of my PSU
+3.3V@22A, +5V@25A, +12V1@18A, +12V2@18A, -12V@0.5A, +5Vsb@2.5A

Thanks everyone in advance!

you need to be looking at the amps on the 12v rail on the psu

and see if it meets the needs of the card

usually using an adapter with a low tier psu is asking for something to go "pop"

Which Cooler Master? Generally speaking, a PSU that's missing a 6+2 pin is missing it for a very good reason. Adapters of this type are very rarely recommended and I can't say this is an exception without more information about your PC - I don't even know what CPU you're using.

As said, that particular PSU is not very good. 6-pin to 8-pin adapter is fine. Many cards are shipped from the manufacturer with one. Both utilize three 12-volt wires which are more than capable of carrying the required wattage.
