Hey Tom'sHardware,

I just transferred my old FX-6300 system to an i5-3470 system, and I want to make sure that it is future proof without upgrading to a new processor platform. I plan on upgrading the CPU and the GPU, and maybe throwing in a little more RAM.

Build:

CPU: i5-3470

MB: MSI H77MA-G43

GPU: R9 380 2gb

RAM: 10gb (4gb x2 Crucial 1333mhz / 2gb x1 Muskin Essential 1333mhz)

HDD's: 500gb Seagate / 320gb Western Digital

PSU: EVGA 750w (idk which model, but it's good)

So i plan on putting in an i7-3770, and a r9 290x. Also getting a new kit of 4gb x2 RAM. Also a SSD may be a possibility.

I run the build off of a AOC i2367fh, and an older Viewsonic 4:3 monitor. Mouse and keyboard will do.

I DO NOT want to upgrade to a new platform for as long as possible, please keep that in mind.

Thanks!

Depending on what settings and gaming quality, you can get a solid 5 years out of it before thinking of upgrading. Unless gaming changes even more and becomes increasingly more taxing to play.

Sticking too the same socket, the i7-3770 is definitely your only upgrade path for your CPU. R9-290X will be a really good upgrade, but unless you can get it for a good price, you will be better off getting an RX 470/480.

How long do you think this rig will last?
