So I recently switched PC cases from my nzxt phantom to a phantek case (actually cheaper than the phantom but mine was getting old and mankey and i liked the phantek). Anyway, having done so, and everything running fine at first. Things first started going wrong when the comp started freezing, or going to a black screen. I played around with things, added more fans etc (even though temps were respectable) and nothing seemed to help. It always seemed to after being on for a certain amount of time, which seemed to be getting less and less. It'd start by everything getting laggy, then getting weird sound through speakers, then either freeze or get a blank screen, but comp never shut off, it stays running.

Then i noticed my north (and partly south bridge) were getting rather hot... as in painful if holding a finger there for a few seconds hot. I've read my board (990fx killer) can run hot, but could this be the cause of the freezing and black screens, and if so, is it worth trying to actively cool the north and south bridge, or is the damage done and i should just fork out for another board... which then might not fix anyway...

I wouldn't know where else to look to troubleshoot what could cause the issue... and don't wanna just start buying random parts until i fix it...

My build:
FX8350 (watercooled closed loop)
Asrock 990fx Killer
GTX 970
16GB G.Skill

Thanks in advance for any info.
