Hi there,
Just got a new system (first build) and put it together last night.
CPU: i5-6600k
CPU cooler: 212 Evo
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
PSU: be quiet! PURE POWER 9 CM 600W 80+ Silver Certified Semi-Modular ATX
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8) DDR4-3000
mobo: Asus z170i Pro Gaming Mini ITX LGA1151
Storage (not connected):
WD Blue M.2-2280 SSD
SeaGate
Background:
Initially I fitted everything into the computer and tried booting it but got no POST. I used an anti-static mat+grounded wristband the whole time.
I tried various different things (take out RAM sticks, use just one, or two, in different slots), booting without grakka, breadboarding it, removing the evo 212 cooler, checked the cpu pins (none are bent), got no thermal paste anywhere except the top of the CPU (some touched the bracket that clips it into place, but should be fine). All fans (including CPU cooler, case fans, grakka fan, PSU fan) turned on and stayed on when the power button was pressed. Tried unplugging the CMOS battery for 15 mins and putting it in again.
At this point I had all the components out of the case, and I removed the M.2 SSD from the back of the mobo. After fitting just the mobo, CPU and RAM the PC finally posted (HURRAY), and went into BIOS. The cpu was reading 90°c so I quickly powered it off, fitted the EVO, and the BIOS was reading a stable 26-30°c temp on he CPU. Only 8gb of RAM was recognised.
I proceeded to add the grakka back on and (I think) this is where it went pete tong. The PC would simply turn on for half a second and off, then repeat. I noticed that of the 8 CPU pins, the left four had been plugged in wrong, if you imagine the x to be plugs and the [ ] to be CPU sockets, I had this:
x[x][ ][x][x]
x[x][ ][x][x]
instead of :
[x][x][x][x]
[x][x][x][x]
New Problem:
The machine boots for half a second, then turns off, and it cycles again and again, almost as if it's shorting somewhere. Could I have wrecked the mobo with the above mis-plugging? Wouldn't have thought so, as it was simply missing one 12v plug.
What I've done since the second problem:
- Tried removing grakka again and different RAM slots
- Tested the PSU with a multi-meter while it was paperclipped and had only the case fans running (all voltages read correctly)
- Standoffs between case and motherboard don't allow case to mobo.
- The back plate for the EVO has a complete air gap between itself and the mobo.
Could there be a short somewhere?
Have I fried the motherboard?
NB:
After removing the EVO I put it back on the same thermal paste (should I have put new paste?)
I haven't removed the EVO again should I replace the thermal paste?
The mobo has no beeper, I will order one now.
Any help would be much appreciated, I'm at my wits end!
Thanks in advance.
