Destroyed Hard Drives using wrong PSU Sata Cable - Possible Fix?

EVGA mistakenly sent me a replacement modular PSU SATA cable with the incorrect pin layout.
I plugged it into 4 hard drives, attempted to power on the PC... nothing.
Discovered the error, used the old (correct) cable, now the first two hard drives connected in sequence are dead.

I would like to repair the drives and recover the data.
Drives: 3TB WD30EZRZ and 1TB, WD10EZEX

What kind of damage was probably done to the drives? Did something on the PCB fail but the actual drive, motor, etc will be fine?

If it's just the PCB, I will attempt to replace it and re-solder the BIOS chip.

I examined both PCB's for visible damage. On the 3TB (the first drive in sequence connected to the cable), two of the components look a little strange/melted, perhaps. They're also right next to the SATA connector

No way of knowing what is damaged on those drives. Try plugging them in to a different computer or external enclosure to confirm the drives are dead. With an incorrect pin out if might be expected to see or smell damage. I suppose you could try replacing the PCB, no idea where you could find a replacement. Good luck!

If evga made an error and sent you the wrong cables then this is their responsibility.
I would push it up management chain for them to pay for your data recovery and disc replacement. Hopefully with a new PCB your drives will be perfectly fine.

While you share some responisbility if you have no backup of your data, at MINIMUM they owe you new hard drives.

Yes, the first thing I did was plug them into an external usb sata device and I've confirmed they are dead.
I've also contacted EVGA about getting replacements/data recovery.
The 3TB actually was the backup to the 1TB... lol. Lesson: Don't have them connected to the same power supply.

i agree with boosted1g

assuming evga actually admit they caused it then they should take responsibility to try to have your data professionally recovered

you could try replacing pcbs i have had success with that in the past but anything you do yourself may of course make the situation worse instead of better

and yes important stuff should always be saved to at least 1--i prefer 2 or 3 places/devices that are actually isolated from your pc

I'll have to buy a heat gun and do this: https://youtu.be/Yn2eL4o-6Eo?t=7m56s
I think it's doable, but then again, who knows if the PCB is even the problem. I simply assume it would be first in line to be fried, but I really have no idea

personally i would wait to see if evga are going to take the blame and fix it for you

you could end up making matters a lot worse by attempting diy stuff

i only did it as it was the only resort for the people i did it for since the cost from a professional data recovery company quoted to them was in the thousands and i probably got very lucky that i didnt botch it up to be honest and never had to do it since thankfully

and in your case yes it could be more than just the pcb got damaged
