Hi, I have a lenovo mini desktop (I3 2120) which currently has an Asus 5570 1GB GPU. The PSU says 180W on it ( Pic here - http://imgur.com/uCJSKAI)

I have run the Asus on it no problems but a friend is upgrading their GPU and is offering to give me his GT640 4GB GPU ( This exact kind https://www.amazon.com/GeForce-GT640-Video-299-5N249-101A8-VG-PCU64-001/dp/B01BUK0DG4)

Will it work fine?

I dont have anything else plugged into the PC really. Just my monitor which is powered by mains, 1 HDD, a keyboard, my mouse is wireless and sometimes an external HD.

Thanks in advance

That power supply is putting out about 168W maximum on the 12V output. You have a 65W CPU and 40W 5570 drawing from that. So you are at around 105W under load. Even assuming that power supply is really putting out less than it's rated, like 140W-150W, you still have some headroom.

The 640 is a 65W card. So you'd be drawing about 130W when using it. Now you're in the area of maybe running that power supply at almost full load constantly, depending on how much power it really puts out. So you're gambling that the power supply puts out close to its rated power.

On a side note, the 4gb is worthless on a card like the 640. The card is just too slow, and it's DDR3 memory. It's still an upgrade but don't expect that games which recommend...

Thanks, to be honest i dont play alot of games, its either an indie, MMO or if im really bored some facebook games for a little while. I had heard that the 640 wasnt that great but I thought its still better than mine anyway and just wanted to check if the PSU could handle it.

I am in 2 minds whether to try it or just keep it as a backup just incase because as you mentioned I cant be sure what the PSU is throwing out really.
