Hello everyone,

I was adding parts to a wish list for an upcoming build a few months ago and after being involved in a hit and run I had some unexpected bills. Now that I have that sorted out and it being tax season I can finally get this build under way. Seems I have missed a lot in my absence.

I was planning on a 6600k skylake but it seems it has a newer model took its place in that same price range. The 7600k kaby lake. With that said even though it has the same socket my mobo of choice needs to change as well since they have updated since than.

I was planning on a z170 from asus but now its seems there are z270's out there. Im sure they're better.

My questions:

Is it necessary to go with the new 270's?

What is the difference if any from the 270 and the 170?

Is there any other chipset better than the 270?

Also since the mobo section is severely confusing me, I was wondering if any can recommend a great mobo for the 7600k?

Just to add what I'm looking for. I'm a gamer. However I'm not looking for VR or 4K gaming. I'm just looking for a solid build that's with the most updated equipment so I can save for new build in a couple of years. Im a fan of asus but I'm not against going for a different brand as my last build was a ASRock that exceeded my expectation and I was very happy with it.

Thanks in advance for any answers, this community is great and I always trust advice I get from here.

The Z170 chipset is compatible with all new CPUs but you will have to flash your BIOS. Seeing your confusion, I'd recommend going with 270 since flashing can be tricky and potentially disastrous.

The Z270 chipset offers more PCIE lanes for additional cards and M.2 SSDs. The 270 chipset offers other advantages such as better connectivity. Otherwise, its quite similar to the Z170.

I would recommend the Z270 krait from MSI or the Asrock Super-carrier if you're looking for an all out MOBO. ;)
