Hey all,

So this is my first post on here so forgive me if I'm in the wrong section but I have some questions about making your own server and any help would be appreciated.

My hardware setup:

-An amd quad core. (Not sure the speed yet)
-16 GB ddr 3 ram. (Not sure speed yet)
- 6 1Tb or 3 2Tb HDD. Seagate or WD 7200 rpm
-NIC card of some kind
-Samsung 250Gb SSD (boot drive)

I want a media server to steam to TV and local pc, and also setup FTP for use outside the LAN. It would be just for personal use. And just another pc or tablet/phone on the clients side.

My question's are:
- Can I install WHS 2012 and setup FTP or is it better to use Filezilla?
- I like the idea of plex but can it be installed on WHS?
- And would Security Essential's be best for security or Bitdefender?

Thanks in advance guys.

You can install WHS 2011 for sure on your hardware (I have it running on an Atom motherboard). You have to figure out, however, how to connect all of your drives, and whether to use any hardware RAID controller (if availalble).

Once you forward necessary ports on your router, you can remote into your server (during WHS installation, you'll be asked for host mane in homeserver.com doman). Setting up FTP is a little bit more difficult thru a router, but not impossible.

I have another DLNA server on top of WHS, and they both coexist.
