my cpu will fit in the socket, but the metal plate that goes down on the cpu gets stuck on the cpu. I have a x99 deluxe ii motherboard and a i7 6850k cpu.

IF I understand you correctly, you are wondering why the metal plate doesn't just drop down nicely? It shoudnt, you will need to apply a relatively large amount of force to get it to close. The point is for it to really squeeze and hold your cpu in place.

Just be 100% sure your cpu is placed in the socket properly.
