Looking for a low budget graphics card better than mine

Hey im just looking for a graphics card better than my radeon hd 4870 1gb. 770 MHz gpu clock 115.2 GB/s bandwidth speed. I'm not looking to play high end games on the best graphics but i would like to play on at least medium settings. My power supply is a 600w. I was looking at a radeon hd 6970 but my cpu socket type is lga 775 so i cant really get anything better than a 3.0 GHz intel core 2 quad q9650 which i plan on eventually getting.

Instead of going a Q9650, I recommend upgrading the CPU and the GPU. to something newer, along the lines of Haswell i5 & R9.
If you're planning to spend 120$CAD for a GPU, I highly recommend the R9 290/280. Although it is 400$~600$ retail, most people are able to find these used for less than 200$ sometimes. Getting one of these working used near your neighborhood can help you a ton.
If you consider something new, I recommend along the lines of Rx 460, or a GTX 950 ti.
