I can almost guarantee that it's not the thermal paste that killed it. As backwards as Apple can be sometimes, they're not stupid enough to use conductive thermal paste. My guess would be that a transistor or capacitor on the motherboard fried, which is an easy fix if you can identify which one it is. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't release motherboard schematics or the tool to identify hardware issues to the public. You having to bring it to them to fix it is kind of their whole business model. There are some technicians that have these tools and schematics even though they're "technically" stolen from Apple. If you can, I'd take it to a 3rd party technician well known for fixing apple products because they might be able to help you, Apple themselves will just tell you to buy a new computer. I'd also recommend Louis Rossman's youtube videos, he makes some good content about how to fix apple products.
