Hey guys. So I have a bit of a problem.

My laptop was giving me grief and it was because of the hard drive (kept on booting my laptop to BIOS and there was nothing on the boot device list, including the drive itself). So I ripped it out and decided to simply copy everything on it somewhere else. What I thought would be an easy process turned to the most torturous time of my life (maybe not, but you understand my struggle).

The hard drive wouldn't show up on Windows but it would show on Linux. On Linux I couldn't open the hard drive so I tried using the terminal and I got an input/output error on some files (which were the ones I need). Can't remember what a bunch of my friends and I tried to bypass that, but it didn't work. So I decided to try data recovery instead. I got Yobot (hope I spelt it right) and it almost worked! It was searching the partions and when it reached 92% (imagine that), the click of death began. That was my first encounter with it, so I kinda panicked. I tried terminating the process but it froze so I did a force close via Task Manager. The clicking persisted so I decided to eject it. It wouldn't eject safely (or maybe I just wasn't patient enough) so I ripped it out.

Now the hard drive won't show up on explorer (but it did before the clicking so I'm guessing that was a RAW hard drive situation) but it shows on my device list. When I click properties, I don't get much information about it. I can eject it via the task bar but that's about it.

I tried using Yobot again and the hard drive didn't show up.

I'm a highly optimistic individual so I stubbornly believe there is hope for my hard drive (unsurprisingly half my life is on it so I must have hope).

So any suggestions? On a scale of one to ten, what's the status of my hard drive (1 being I can get my work, and 10 being I can get all my work back).

I'd really, really appreciate the help guys, so please do me the biggest of favors and help me.

Thank you so very much in advance.

Hello... It's an OS security thing... Windows has "security" and you have to give permission to the OS as "administrator" to use/install additional Devices.

1) At the bottom left of the OS "taskbar"...the round Windows icon (Start) left click it... to open more options.
2) Right click "Computer"
3) left click "Manage"
4) left click "Storage"
5) Left click "Disk management"
6) The "New (Bad) drive" should be seen (listed) here.
7) Look at the Bottom of the page and right click on the "Graphics" for that DISK#
8) Left click "Mark Partition as Active"

And that all there is to it... IF it was a Working/formatted WIN OS drive in another Computer... you will be able to open, view, and Copy from it now.
Hello... Clicking means it is mechanically dying... and the read heads and arm are having travel problems. B /

If you have "important" data on it is best not to over use it... or use file fixing/formatting APPs on it B / ...slow down your emotions and actions. You will only have so many attempts of coping the DATA to another source. APPs that are Re-Copying the DATA to it's self ( the Bad Drive ) is just destroying your chances further B O

1) Basically the Right thing to do is to connect it to the another WIN OS computer... like you did B )
2) You need to give the NEW OS "Permission" to use it... to see it and attempt to Copy the files.
3) Right click Computer-Manage-storage-Disk Management...
4) Right click the graphics below for the NEW drive.
5) And "Mark Partition as Active"

A clicking hard drive is a dying hard drive.

Right now, you have one and only one task of any importance.
Retrieve your personal data off that drive. Not recover on that drive...copy to a different drive.
Not the OS, not the applications...your personal data.

Once that is done, then get a new drive and put it in.

The more you mess with it, the greater likelihood of it dying, and taking your stuff with it.

Thank you so much for reply!

I don't know if this will work, considering I haven't tried it yet, but I'll give it a shot. But before I do so, how do I give the NEW OS permission to use it? And where can I find Comouter-Manage-Storage-Disk Management?

I'm a bit tech-illiterate so I kinda need really precise instructions otherwise I'll just mess everything up.
