Hi, I am buying a new PC (from scratch) within the next 1-2 months, mainly for a high RAM/cores demanding computing and a decent performance of the Witcher 3. Will be used as a computing server as well.

Copying from the sticky thread:

  • ■ Approximate Purchase Date: e.g.: 1-2 months from now (March/April 2017)
    ■ Budget Range: ~£725 (total, would love to lower it a bit)
    ■ System Usage from Most to Least Important: high RAM/cores computing, gaming
    ■ Are you buying a monitor: No (recently bought an Asus VS248HR 24.0" 1920x1080 60Hz Monitor, https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/9fvZxr/asus-monitor-vs248hr)
    ■ Do you need to buy OS: No
    ■ Location: UK, London
    ■ Overclocking: Yes (FX-8320)
    ■ SLI or Crossfire: Possible in the future, but not mandatory as gaming is of secondary importance
    ■ Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080
    ■ Additional Comments: SSD + HDD (RAID 1 in the near future)
    ■ And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Simply need a (decent) PC
I made two builds, one based on AMD FX-8320 (for cores, with possible overclocking, hence the cooler), and the other on Pentium G4560 (it is a bargain, and could possibly be upgraded in 2-3 months).

I think the bigger issue here is whether I would be able to upgrade the G4560 easily to something with 4-6 cores with this build, because if not I am going for the AMD.

You will as well notice two different RAMs, I went for lower speed with G4560 because of the voltage, but would rather get the 2400.

For number crunching machine, how about going with i7 instead?

Few words

Went slightly over the budget but it was best i could do without sacrificing the gaming performance. For number crunching, this build does far better than your AMD build,

This is a really good point... This £700+ is stretching my budget already, but both i7-6700 and even i7-6700K(?) are definitely worth consideration. Especially along some savings on memory and storage and the GTX 1050 Ti (I have seen some benchmarks, looks like it performs even better on Witcher 3 than 960 and R9 380) proposed by you and @Supahos hint about Ryzens, as prices might drop soon.

This would be amazing, and it is currently just £50 more expensive than i7-6700 (£320 for Ryzen 7 1700 + £80 for the cheapest mobo), unfortunately this has only 2 RAM slots (if I get it right), which makes it harder to expand later.

Thank you both. Now I just need to find the cheapest accessories and some extra cash.
