What fried my motherboard?

Hi!

I have had a Gigabyte H97N-WIFI which caused issues from the beginning for 3-4 years now. All drivers didn't install properly, Startup went randomly through Gigabyte's DualBIOS (primary bios fails), BSOD and booting every now and then. I tried switching ram, cpu and now eventually I went for a new motherboard and the problem was fixed. However, when I was replacing the old motherboard, I noticed it had fried from the bottom metal frame under cpu socket: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/98648175/friedgigabyte.jpg

What could have caused this? My PSU is Seasonic G550 and case Antec ISK 600. The pic looks like as if the bottom was touching the case but this shouldn't be the case (pun intended) since the case has integrated standoffs. The system is hooked via a surge protected extension cable but my home's power sockets are not grounded.

I'm also wondering if I buy a Thermalright True Spirit 90 fan, will the backplate be touching the case? Should I buy additional standoffs for this and leave the mobo I/O shield out? The mobo is mounted horizontally and the case doesn't have additional space for motherboard backplate. Here you can see the height for integrated standoffs: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Antec/ISK_600/images/innersidehdd.jpg

I don't see how that fried your motherboard. All that backplate does is hold the CPU into the socket with the rentention arm. It wouldn't matter if it was touching something else that's also metal.

Thanks for reply. Do you consider a backplate looking like that is normal? Current temperatures with stock intel cooler are 45c in idle and 70c in load so they're just fine.

Yep. temps are in checks.
