Game Frame Rate Drop

Hey guys. So I am experiencing a significant drop in frame rate when I play games. My concern is that when I first bought the PC it had no problem running Games. For example, Dark souls 3 was running at 60FPS at max settings. Now it fluctuates from 15 FPS to 35FPS. The temperature of the GPU goes up to about 81C. I have dusted the inside of the case numerous times. I have even taken apart my GPU and dusted the inside of it. There wasn't a lot of dust to begin with. All my fans are working properly. I don't understand the sudden drop in FPS. I was thinking maybe the GPU is just crapping out. But I have only had it for a year. My specs are below. Thanks!

Processor: Intel Core i7-6700
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970
Motherboard: GB H110m-S2H-CF
Memory: A-Data Tech 8GB

I should also mention that I have AVG Zen for anti-virus. I have run multiple scans and have not found any Malware or viruses. The case also has good air flow. I was also thinking about a possible memory leak? But I wouldn't know how to fix that. Thanks in advance for the help,

Hello mate,

firstly in regards to the GTX 970 temps, they are actually designed to run up to around 85C - 95C max, anything above that is then considered an issue. The temperature can vary depending on how much load the graphics card is under and you must consider Dark Souls 3 is a pretty intensive game to max out even for a GTX 970.

To put it into perspective I have 2 GTX 970 Strix in SLI, they run at around 60 normally but if I play Star wars battlefront with 200% Resolution scaling, the cards actually run at around 80C. Its never an issue if it means just turning up your fan rpm.

Your first call of action should be to completely reinstall your nvidia drivers. Uninstall the drivers from the control panel under "programs and features". You will notice your screen resolution stretch and/or become smaller. This is a good way to tell whether or not your drivers have been properly installed as they will then fit back to size following your installation.

Thanks for the suggestion. And the education on the temps. I actually went ahead and did that this morning. After everything was said and done, I am still experiencing the same problem. I was contemplating upgrading to a 1070. But I'm hesitant of running into the same problem with the new card.

I don't want to tell you its the graphics card incase it isn't. A GTX 1070 is a lot of money to throw at something that might be easy to fix. It might be worth doing a fresh install of windows if you are fortunate enough to have a decent internet connection or installation disk as they recommend you reinstall every single time a new component is added to your system (although i can reassure you nobody has the time to do that aha).

Have you overclocked you card at all?

and what temps are your CPU on when playing games?

Yes that was my concern as well. I can try reinstalling windows. My CPU temps are pretty low. They go up to around 45-55c under games. It's very much cooler than the GPU. Unfortunately I am not fortunate enough to have a installation disk or decent internet connection.
