ISP without router connection

My ISP connection to the internet consist of what I think is a modem, that then connects to a network switch. To get internet on a PC I need to connect the switch to the PC and setup a static IP, the thing is that I want to connect the switch to a router that gives IPs to the devices that connect to it.

How should I do this connection? Should I connect the switch to the LAN ports of the router or to the other one? Should I setup DHCP? Or NAT?

Thank you in advance!

A "textbook" connection is like this:

ISP --- Modem (no NAT)-(public IP)----> User Router with NAT and DHCP ---(private IP)---> switch ----> ethernet clients.

These days, often times the ISP gives you a GATEWAY=Modem+WIFI router+4 ethernet in 1 box, in which case it looks like this:

ISP ----- GATEWAY (modem+WIFI router+4 port LAN DHCP here) ---(private IP)--> optional Switch for more LAN ports -----> Clients.

In ALL instances, where you see ROUTER=NAT and there should be only and only ONE of those. At the same time there should one and ONLY ONE DHCP server.

Thanks for the interest, I am not a Network expert as you can see but I can manage myself around and I didn't know that routers have an option to set it up with a Static IP service from the ISP, I connected my router, selected static IP and then typed in the values the ISP gave me for IP, GW, Mask and DNS and it started routing seamlessly.

Thank you all!

Yeah my ISP didn't give a GATEWAY just the modem, I think it was that way because it is and enterprise service, but with a router I solved it very quickly.
