How do I connect an 8 pin GPU to a 6 pin PSU?

I was about to order my stuff for my first budget build but ran into yet another problem... I did try searching around but everything I found was either outdated or confused me even more :(

The GPU I want has an 8 pin connecter, the PSU has 1 x 6-Pin, 2 x 6+2-Pin

I'm getting very frustrated trying to learn everything and might just spend more money on a GPU with a 6 pin connector...

That 6+2 pin connector of your PSU is for the GPU that requires 8-pin. Basically, that 6+2 pin when put together is equivalent to the 8-pin socket of your GPU.

I appreciate your help! Now another question - the GPU says it requires a max output of 225w and the PSU only gives 150w from the 6+2 pin .. is that going to be a problem?

Your psu is more than enough. With an 8-pin connection the most that card can theoretically pull is 225w 150w from the 8-pin connection and 75w from the pci-e port. However it will not pull that much. An overclocked rx 480 can pull just north of 150w so the used an 8-pin connection instead of a 6 because a 6-pin is only rated for 75w.

150 from the 8 pin cable, the other 75 watts comes from the pci express x16 slot where you inserted the gpu

before buying a gpu you must be sure what you are buying and if your current parts will support them

what psu do you have?

if it is too small you will have problems, the pc might shutdown or restart suddenly while playing, share the entire specs of your pc please
 


What was meant by that is: 8-pin connection @ 150W + PCIe connection @ 75W.
So, 150W + 75W = 225W. That's the meaning of "requires a max output of 225w" - hence, the GPU's 8-pin socket.

Did you bother reading the original post? Psu in question is a 550w Evga G2 which is more than enough for an Intel G4560 and a RX480.
 


Wattage is Amperage x Voltage. If the +12V rail provides enough power (watts), it provides enough current (amps).

the 8 pin power connector offers 150 watts maximum and it was designed to be like that, it is well, basically a standard, how the psu does it, not sure exactly

if you need more watts, you need to use another cable

the pci express itself that offers up to 75 watts

the 6 pins power cable offers only 75 watts for the gpu

Just trying to understand if both type use three 12v wires how the PSU limits one connector at 75w yet allows the other 150w. And why a system using a 6 to 8 pin adapter still provides well over 200w to the card. Some reviews have the MSI gaming X 8g at 224w max.

Thanks. The article does not answer my questions though. It does seem to confirm that 6 to 8 pin adapter are fine provided the PSU is of proper type & quality.
