current: i7 4770k 16gb ram 2x 970gtx in sli samsung evo SSD
i play csgo/kotk/battlegrounds - want max frames bois 1920x1080 on 144hz monitor. i have 2 monitors hooked up. the other is for browsing pron.
I am about to upgrade but need some guidance. I want to get a samsung evo 960 m.2 500 gb and a nvidia 1080 GPU.
for the cpu/board/ram i was unsure. I almost went 6700k with 32gb of ram but i want to make sure i get a board/chip combo that will use the m.2 the most efficient/fastest. I was also looking at 7700 chipset.
Any guidance here would be appreciated.

Solution
Are you doing SLI?

I want to say the NVMe drive just disables the sata port controller for slot 1.

Here's one that works:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132928
Under the specifications it states:
1 x M.2_1 Socket 3 with M key, type 2242/2260/2280/21100 storage devices support (both SATA & PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode)*
1 x M.2_2 Socket 3 with M key, type 2242/2260/2280 storage devices support (PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode)**

* The M.2_1 socket shares SATA_1 port when use M.2 SATA mode device. Adjust BIOS settings to use a SATA device.
** The M.2_2 socket shares SATA_56 ports when use M.2 PCIE mode device in X4 mode. Adjust BIOS settings to use SATA devices.
Your current build is more than enough, you don't need ANY upgrade at all apart from maybe a 1080ti.
Your CPU will only see something like a 20% increase in raw performance, and that won't even translate directly to FPS.
Get yourself a good cooler like the H5/H7 and slap on an OC as well as a graphics card upgrade with a 1440p 144hz monitor or something.

i appreciate the suggestion. my friend has that m.2 and he loads the game up approx 25 seconds faster than me

i thought the same thing. we timed them. my kotk is on a samsung 850 evo that only has games on it. my OS is on a seperate SSD.

Theoretical read/write speed does not translate directly to performance.
@hatebreeder, what game are we talking about here?
If you're talking about H1Z1, the load times on that game always vary and can be anywhere from 3 seconds to 30. Very poorly designed interface.

If by theoretical you mean 6times the throughput possibility, and a much faster load time on any game than my buddy who's got an 850, whereas I have a 950, then yeah it's theory all day long.

You can't simply brush off the performance difference as nonexistent. 5-30 seconds is a pretty short time, but when you're in the moment and playing a game, that's an excessively long time.

Same reason people want 300fps in csgo. Neglegable performance, but people are stat pushers and percentage crunchers. Every 0.01% helps, or in this case, "theoretical" 6x read rate capability.

Get one and install windows and your games on it. You'll see a bit of a difference. It will feel crisper and load faster. I had a 850 and a 950. I had the 850 first, then decided I liked the 950 more. I know the difference.

Thank you for the suggestion. IF i was going to get a samsung 960 m2 what board would be best? Z270 ?

I would say just look for a Z270 board that does support M.2 NVMe drives. Make sure thoroughly that it does. Most, if not every z270 has a built in slot for it.
NVMe drives are tiny. Barely the length of your index finger. It's quite strange when you get one.

I do want to note with my statements, this only effects load times, and transitionary periods especially in games like CS:GO when you're swapping maps. Just, basically, anything that requires direct access to the hard drive. Once the data is loaded, it is all handled by the RAM, unless you don't have enough to handle the game. You have 16gb, so you should be good. Again, stat crunching here. It'll still be fast as all getout with an 850, but it is even faster with a 960.

You honestly wont be disappointed. Don't spend more for a 960 though. A 950 EVO would do just as well as a 960 pro for you, as THAT is just a negligible difference. It does have a slight difference in throughput, but not enough to discern between those two rates.

A 1tb should be enough, or even a 500gb.

Oddly enough I also noticed a large increase in my download rate. I truly don't understand why it effected it, but it did. My max download rate on steam was ~30mb/s (300mbps) with the 850. On the 950 it went up to 45mb/s (450mbps), and I only pay for 300 meg internet. I have no clue why, but this happened.

Thank you for this! I understand that i am not going to see MAJOR performance improvement from what i have now. However i am allotted an upgrade right now by the wife and i want to get something that will last a while.

THe motherboard thing is what im most nervous about as multiple things i've read state that even if the boards can handle the m2 nvme there can still be performance issues due to pci-e conflicts?
