Setting up a new place and its about 1,200 sq/ft and not pre-wired with cat5 so in the beginning I would most likely try to set up a wireless network at least temporarily.

ISP options are:

60 Mb (25 up)
100 Mb (35 up)
200 Mb (35 up)

and so on but I wouldn't need more then that.. I think. Is Mb the same as Mbps??

What would be some good options to tackle this. I don't need anything super fancy but I was thinking about grabbing a decent modem and router. And if I needed to throw a ranger booster/extender around somewhere once I see how things are panning out.

The Modem needs to be DOCSIS 3.0

Maybe something like this

For a Router

The D-Link DIR-842 caught my eye as potentially being enough.

Also ones like this

I'm not going to be spending $3-600 on a router/modem. So was just wondering what the best bang for my buck would be to take advantage of 100 Mb.

Also I know that steam uses a different number system to gauge internet speed. Where speedtest would give me ~50/25 but steam would show 6-9 whatever. Whats the difference?

Any advice?

The ISP reports in megabits/sec.
Steam reports in megabytes/sec.

Approx 8:1 ratio.

So 6 * 8 = 48 = close enough to 50.

For a new house, why don't you go with the ISP default device at first.
It may be OK, it might suck.

But use what they offer at first. Get to know the building, and make an informed decision later.

Over the intro rate periods its $5-8 per month to rent depending on the ISP, I think they require it for the first month unless thats *. I was thinking if I can get a decent modem for 50-90 bucks id save a few bucks versus the $115-184 over 23 months and potentially have something thats more versatile..

Alternatively I could go for a used default router maybe and hope its working when I receive it to save some coin.

Is there any website you don't have to sign up for where people review the range of wireless routers?

And thanks but do you write Mb differently? Is the steam one written MB.

Mb = megabits (your ISP)
MB = megabytes (Steam)

For router reviews and info, see here: https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/

For inexpensive modems you cant really go wrong with zoom 5345 which is real world capabile of about 200mbps (claims 343 but would not really be able to keep up with a 300mbps stream).

For routers I am a little biased to the ASUS RT-AC68U. While this $155 model is certianly outside of your price range but there is a special version of this router (with the same exact hardware/internals) with t-mobile branding that only costs $81. This is a top notch dual-core router which makes getting it for almost half price a very good bang for buck.

What I recieved was a TM822G/NA-0 Modem and I believe but don't quote me a Netgear N600 Dual Band wireless router. I looks like that one and was dual band and such but I don't remember where I wrote it down thats just from memory. Pretty sure its that one though. Now this is for cable vision. That uses coaxial to power the modem.

They have some other modems for customers who run more expensive internet packages. I talked with the guy who works for them and he said he only knows of 4 modems that will work with their company. I'm not sure if thats just what he knows of or what he has to say. I could be true but seeing that he works for them I can't take it as fact.

Does anyone know of any experiences with other modems working with cablevision.

Also if say my modem was 8x4 could I replace it with a modem that is 16x4 or whatever and have it work. Or does it not work like that?

That said one of these modems can be found used for about 60 bucks. So if I have it for say 13 months, it'll start saving me money. Although I would need a router aswell but maybe there is a better one that can be had.

The wifi test in another room on a older base model laptop only netted 29 down 15 up. Still have to play around more and see whats up.

Also this is sort of a different topic but I got my little PC up and running that I will be taking over there. On wifi I did some tests with counter strike to see how the wlan was working.

If you know the game, the scoreboard shows around 30 ping but netgraph shows 47-50 ping. Whats up with that? No packet loss or anything. I turned the settings down and frames are at around 100 FPS but I experience some studded type lag depending on how much is going on. I don't think its FPS related. How does that sound, thats on wifi?
