Can I use the modem and switch at the same time?

Hello

I plan on running the phone like through the modem, and using one of the modems ethernet ports to connect the switch for more ethernet ports.

Would I, and other people, be able to use the modems ethernet ports along with the switches ports at the same time to access the internet? or will I only be able to use soley the modem or soley the switch if it's connected to the modem?

Thanks, i was concerned that's what the 'switch' part meant in the hardwares name.


A family member is also complaining about doing this will 'destabilize the router/modem' because we're not all on the switch box and that we are on modem and switch.

Is that so? I do not see why that would be so otherwise switches would not be used.
