I have fx 6100 , asuis m5a97 le , r7 260x and this power supply http://www.chieftec.eu/en/psus/ps-2/smart-series/gps-400a8.html , i want to upgrade the videocard to r9 280x whitch it have 1x 8 pin and 1 x 6 pin , but i dont have the 6 pin , will an adaptor do the work ?

yes, of course. But looking at the PSU website, i'm a little worried about their components quality and power delivery.
But still, a 400W is not a good choice for 280x, you better pick a 500W or better from well-known company, that has a better build quality on their products.

as per the cable question the PSu comes with a 8PIN (6+2) PCIe:1 in the specs, that would be the one you use to connect to Video card, just do not use the +2 if unneeded by video card.

Don't use adapators, if the PSu doesn't have the connections it's normally for a good reason.

Replace the PSU with one that has the feeds you require for the GPU.
