Custom build external gpu kit for laptop using card express slot

Now I plain to build a external gpu kit because the one people sale are to expensive for what it built with now my dell vostro 1510 is form 2008 so yeah no thunder bolt port now I know you can use the pci-e slot where my wireless card or express card slot. I plain to use the express card slot. Now my question is I have one of those adapter that coverts pci-e 1x to pci-e 16x that uses a usb 3.0 cable to transfer data between those two. Any GPU you may be able to use with that setup isnt going to help much with an almost 10 year old laptop. Save your money and update.
