Hi, and thanks in advance for any help. I'd describe myself as a fairly expert builder - not a pro, maybe because I'm a bit out of the loop tbh, but I tend to know how to move inside a case. So when I have a system that just shuts down and restarts itself after less than a couple seconds in furmark with a brand new GTX 1070 I know it has to be either the PSU or the GPU.
My system draws around 400-410w at full load (32GB RAM, i7-5820K NO OC, gtx 1070 MSI Armor OC, SSD, DVDRW, and that's it). My PSU is a 650W unit. According to my calculation the power draw on the +12 rail should not exceed 35A (and I'm being very pessimistic). My PSU is rated for 40.
The shop where I bought my card was kind enough to lend me another one, identical, to rule the GPU problem out. The reboot issue persisted (it's not only furmark: it happens in games too). I also tried various combinations of drivers from Nvidia, to no avail.
If I hard limit the GPU's power draw, say to 80 percent using MSI Afterburner, Furmark goes on and on without the slightest hiccup (and I can go on gaming for hours).
So now for the crucial information: the PSU is a cheap-ass LC-Power unit. But it's about 18 months old and never had a problem with the very old radeon 4850 I had before. I figure the amp rating on +12v is nowhere near the declared 40A, but not even 35A? And we're talking full load!
My point is: all evidence points to a bad/dying/too cheap PSU. It just doesn't seem plausible. Before I try purchasing a new one, I thought maybe some second opinion might help me evaluate better the situation. Maybe I don't know, there's some known issues with that motherboard or that specific GPU under that OS that I don't know about. Any input is highly appreciated.
