I don't understand why you want AMD alternatives if it's just your CPU that died. Intel motherboards are not compatible with AMD CPUs. What is your budget for the CPU exactly?
Oops, forgot to mention that my bad! Yeah, I'm getting a new motherboard too! Don't really have a budget in mind, was just hoping for suggestions for CPU's around the same capability as my existing one. So, like, I wouldn't notice too much of a different if that makes sense?
You can buy the new R 7 1700 which is the cheaper 8-core of the new Ryzen CPUs or wait for the R5 on april/may
Since he is into gaming and the price of the 1700 is right around the price of a 7700 I would wait until reviews come out that directly compare those two CPUs. That was not in AMDs comparison testing for gaming and I think that is quite telling. Just wait for the NDAs to expire and results to come out THEN make your choice.
As an aside rybearddd I wouldn't get stuck on AMD only as AM3 setups do not perform as good in gaming as Intel products if you are going for a cheap (and at this point outdated) solution. If my guess is wrong and the new Ryzen gaming performance is just as good or better than a 7700 from Intel then by all means support AMD.
