USB shortcuts not working between computers

So I have only just come across this problem

I have a usb stick with a bunch of photos saved to multiple folders of differing categories, (these are example photos I use of differing styles for photography) I also have another folder for each shoot idea for a particular day with simply folder shortcuts that link back to these original folders just renamed and ordered so as not to duplicate the same images over and over instead only using folder shortcuts only taking a few kbs.

This is all save on my portable 32gb usb stick.

the problem I have is when I plug the usb into my computer at work all the links are broken.
If i create new shortcut links then these new created links dont work when i get back to my home computer, this seems very odd to me. (both computers are high end machines running windows 10)

Have windows changed the way they link shortcuts or what is the story here?
I understand that the drive the usb is connected to may be a different drive letter
but i wouldnt think linking back to files on the very same portable usb would be such a difficulty??

Or should i be trying the method stated in this thread about removing the root drive letters?:

Solution
A link to a file or folder contains full path so if a letter changes path will be broken. Drive letter is assigned by OS and doesn't stay with a drive.
