i will have the OS installed on a seperate SSD so for regular usage which would be faster as i can get both for the same price: a 5400rpm SSHD or a 7200rpm HDD?

Solution

I would get the 7200RPM.

The SSHD is only fast in the read speed of whatever blocks end up in the 8GB cache space. Write speed is still at the 5400RPM level.
And for that use...you would be accessing the same 'blocks' almost never.

The 7200RPM drive is faster across the whole drive, read and write.

im mainly going to be using the PC for gaming, casual web browsing, maybe some light editing of 1080p video and backing up my other devices content to the PC.
