Hi there,

I am facing with a frustrating problem with my PC and hope someone can help. I have a desktop in which the hard disk bleeps and the PC hangs for 10 to 15 secs. The windows is very slow to boot and the and application takes up to a few minutes to open up. Initially I thought that it is a hard disk problem. Since it was in warranty, I got it replaced. But the problem is still there.

Can anyone tell me what is the problem and thereby the solution pls. My configuration is :

Intel DG41 TY m/b
Intel Q6600 processor
2X2GB RAM (800 MHz.)
Toshiba 1 TB Hard disk (MG03ACA series)
Windows 7 Professional 64 bit

Though this is a guess, is it possible that the power supply is not adequate/ gone bad (I have a 390 W SMPS and two 80 mm fans in the cabinet)?

Also, once or twice the desktop theme was blurred. Is it possible that something has gone wrong with the on-board graphics. Is there any way to check it?

And one more thing, I have connected my HDD to SATA1 port of m/b. Someone was telling me that it should be connected to SATA0. Is it true?

Awaiting response,

Arvind Gupta

ok, you have 4 SATA port right? the numbering will be something like SATA0 ,SATA1 , SATA2 and SATA3. SATA0 is usually the 1st port. also i checked put your manual it seems you only have a SATA 2 connection ie (3Gbs)....and you already have the benchmark result why dont you compare it to other benchamark result to see how your pc speed compare's....also on updating the BIOS read here http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/desktop-boards/000005547.html

and also DO NOT upgrade your HDD firmware unless the manufacturer said so.

If the HDD pass then it seems that your PC is just slow after all your running a Core 2 Dou CPU with 4GB RAM.. try a benchmark software to test the speed of your pc. also about the HDD connection to the SATA port that depends on the mobo. some mobo(especially intel one's) have only 1 sata 3 port usually that's SATA 0. try connecting the HDD there see if improve performance. also defrag your HDD and turn off some software that automatically startup.

Abnormal beeping sounds could be caused by corrupted hard drives/. So, go check your PC hard drive with CHKDSK or other diagnostic software to see whether it is still healthy.

OK. I will make the change to SATA0 port. Can you pls. suggest any bench-marking tool for accessing the speed of the PC. BTW it is a new hard disk (I got it replaced after the previous one was giving the same trouble).

Thanks,

Thanks for your response. It is a new hard drive (I got it replaced when the previous HDD was giving the same problem and later on it was not getting detected as well). So do you suppose chkdsk will be required?

Thanks for the response. I went through the document of my m/b (Intel DG41TY). I does not mention that SATA0 is the high(er) speed interface. I ran the third benchmark tool (passmark). My computer ranked a 8 percentile. The novabench software reported a score of 505. One interesting thing reported by novabench was the drive write speed of 73MB/sec whereas the drive is supposed to have a GBps interface. Do I need to short any jumpers etc on the drive to gain speed. BTW my HDD is a enterprise edition HDD (basically a server HDD). I also updated the bios but no relief. And one more query pls. -- like one can update the m/b firmware, does the HDD also have any firmware which needs to be updated.
