couple years back i built my pc , i was on a strict budget but the idea was to eventually upgrade some of the components,
i need advice on what to upgrade first here are the specs:

AMD FX 8350
Asrock Fatal1ty 990fx Am3
GTX 970 MSI Armor 2x OC 4gb (3.5)
Corsair DDR3 16GB 2400 MHZ
Corsair CXm 850 PSU .
1tb SSD.( x2 500gb)
1tb HDD. (x2500 gb)
gaming monitor Asus 1080p ,

with the new Ryzen ,i was probably thinking to upgrade to one but i dont know if the videocard will be good enough.
what do you guys think.
i want it to play next gen games.
with the current systems i get 35 + framerate , and sometimesid drops to 25 fraps and never stable after 40. on ultra.
thanks.

I would suggest to stick with your current GPU (for now). Wait for Ryzen's release, reviews, and real-world user benchmarks in the next few weeks. By then, you can decide if a) the Ryzen is good enough for you in both price and performance, so, upgrade to Ryzen, or b) the Ryzen is not good for your price/performance, so, upgrade to Intel i5.

With your current system, that FX 8350 of yours already bottlenecks the GTX 970 especially in CPU-hungry games. I don't see the point in upgrading to a more powerful GPU (such as a GTX 1070) as it would further hinder the GPU's performance due to your weaker CPU. In fact, the adequate GPU to pair with that FX 8350 without any bottlenecking whatsoever is just a GTX 1050 Ti (which is considerably...

Your video card is very capable, I have one myself. I'd recommend waiting a month or so to see what Intel's response to Ryzen will be but if you were to buy something right now there is no reason not to! (Maybe wait for some independent reviewers/youtubers to upload some information about them).

i'd probably sit on that system for a little bit. july seems like the right time for myself to upgrade. your system is still fairly decent and by waiting all you'll end up doing is saving money/getting better hardware. by the time the dust settles i'm sure both intel and amd will both be good choices (if ryzen turns out to be what everyone thinks it's going to be)

we should see pricing going down soon for intel CPU's since ryzen is coming out at the end of this week. there are some articles around the web reporting that intel has already dropped prices on it's CPU's ahead of AMD's launch. i'm still waiting for these price drops to come to Canadian retailers

So, your upgrae path to a powerful GPU would be to first upgrade your CPU (Ryzen or i5/i7), MB (X300 series or B/H/Z series), RAM (DDR4).

And, your PSU as well (which you can upgrade as early as now). Your current CXM 850W (if that's the green version) is poor quality. With the possible upgrades I mentioned above, you can get a good-quality and reliable 500W-ish PSU to run the entire rig. I suggest getting the Seasonic G-550 for this one (good price as of today).

this is good advice but he's not really asking about a new GPU. he's asking about if he should get a new platform/CPU and if his GPU makes it all worth while. i'd definitely go with a upgrade in the CPU department if i were you. you'll find some benefit with it.

also, your power supply is fine. its actually more than fine. even the green version. some CXM models aren't great. the 850 is not bad at all.

Thanks. But OP said "with the new Ryzen ,i was probably thinking to upgrade to one but i dont know if the videocard will be good enough." To which I pointed out that he should stick to his current GPU (even though his current CPU will bottleneck his current GPU) first. Upgrading to Ryzen or Intel i5/i7 Skylake/Kaby Lake (whichever he picks), as I mentioned, gives him the opportunity to upgrade to a better GPU because the OP said in his post "i want it to play next gen games" and "with the current systems i get 35 + framerate , and sometimesid drops to 25 fraps and never stable after 40. on ultra.".

This ultimately leads to a better GPU than the GTX 970 he currently has. So, I am very clear that in order to achieve what the OP wants: Step 1) Stick to current rig. Step 2) Wait for Ryzen release/benchmarks. Step 3) Decide if Ryzen or Intel is a better upgrade price/performance-wise. Step 4) Upgrade CPU/MB/RAM. Step 5) Upgrade GPU.

The above steps would find the OP at 60+++ framerates stable on ultra with next gen games, which, is the intent of his post the way I see it.
