Prepare to Facepalm

So, PSU's are probably the thing i know the least about. I have a rough understanding of the efficiency system and how to figure out which wattage works for a system.

However, i was at a shop today and i was about to get a 550W Gold for a friend but the guy in the shop recommended a 650W Bronze for the same price. (Looking back he was probably just trying to sell stock and played me) but for some reason i went for it.

He managed to sell me on the 5 year warranty Thermaltake has and He said that the difference in efficiency is 7% since the 650W makes up for the gap in efficiency since it has more to work with compared to the 550w.

How would that even work? Can that difference actually help the efficiency? And did i get a unit that was far worse than what i was originally after?

550 Gold i went in for: https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151119&gclid=CjwKEAiA3NTFBRDKheuO6IG43VQSJAA74F77iMpYiYp10M1BPBr9rviwyXTukoKKQexrP4uAkwiOPxoCjKXw_wcB

650 Bronze i left with: https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA7RD3GG5029&cm_re=thermaltake_650w-_-17-153-173-_-Product

Thanks guys.

don't know about the actual specs, but if those newegg prices are what you paid, you could have saved about $20 and still got a psu that was of good quality and met your wattage requirement, even a semi modular one.

atleast you got a 5 year warranty out of it though. 3 year warranties seem to be the average

Is it even worth putting in a system or If it is unopened should i try and return it and switch it for the Seasonic?

My friend does not want to return it because then we wont be able to build his pc tomorrow. I just tried to sway him for 20 minutes and he won't budge.

Is the Thermaltake at least safe to use? I have a Seasonic in my system and i know they are better. But we aren't risking the system but putting a TT PSU in it are we?

It is fair to say they are a little Bias, but it is for good reason. They try to give you the best possible components.

Show your buddy this. He might be excited to build tomorrow, but nearly as excited as the shopkeeper when you go back to buy yet another psu. In that video are some names I'm sure you won't recognize, but I guarantee that there is at least 1 that you will. Some thermaltake units aren't as bad, but some are. Choice is his, wait a few hours for a local swap or a few weeks for RMA, just to get the same gawd-aweful psu back.

For me its all depend on price and reputable review. As long as the review said its fair to use, I would get the cheapest one. Last time I bought a Thermaltake SmartM 850W for $65 in Newegg (2,5 years ago), checked its passed in Hardocp and techpowerup, and its still running in my main pc now. Seasonic is a good brand, if you have no problem with the price, then you should go for it. Not all Thermaltake is good.

I checked current price, I would suggest you to get
$49.99 SeaSonic S12II Series S12II 620 Bronze (SS-620GB) 620W Intel ATX 12 V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Its almost half the price of your picked seasonic, it is bronze but 620W. I think this has better value.

Good luck
