This fix won't work for Windows 7 upgrade to 10 . The question is where did this come from? I don't recognize this as a legitimate screen, never saw one like it ever. Not surprisingly Windows 10 is no longer a free download, too bad if you lost it to this. I started at DOS, win 5.1, 95, 98, 2000, XP, 7, and 10, I've learned a few tricks but I could not get passed this. If you find yourself in a similar situation update 7 with service packs any trouble with browser get Firefox or chrome. Short term solution.

Turns out it is still possible to get free windows 10 upgrade, but who wants to go through this again? Something more than an image backup needs to be done. The select keyboard problem needs a real fix

you do know that once you have installed '10 as an upgrade you can install it clean without having to install 7 first. If that's what you are asking.

Perhaps if you explained what "fix" you're referring to, the screen you're referring to that you don't recognise, and the problem you need help with, someone could actually get started offering solutions.

As it stands, your post is largely an enigma.

OK I'm new here, the context I thought I was referring to was the windows 10 issue where a restart leads to a page ... Select your keyboard, which is a dead end, no work around, unless you call resetting the system and doing hours of work an acceptable solution, it happened to me twice OK? Having to do this again with an ISO file will shorten the process but Microsoft needs to fix this. Hopefully I have made myself clear. Not trying to be adversarial here. Just want to contribute and learn

In what context did this appear?
I have never seen this....running Win 10 since literally day 1 of the original Tech Preview, across many systems.

Well it just happened again 3rd time, didn't make ios disk . My fault. Boot up sequence halts at select keyboard screen. Keyboard or mouse won't work. D drive on hp computer has backup and system reset. This appears to be my only option. Will revert to Windows 7 . Have to have a few drinks now so I don't smash my computer. Nothing gets past this screen. Don't have any files to boot from on an alternative drive

Just don't want to go through this mile of crap again. Thought I had a really good installation this time, trusted that I had more time, rebooted and booted in the balls again! Hoping someone might have something but going upstairs to start the long miserable process over again. As I said. This problem needs to be fixed at the source. As long as this vulnerability exists no one would put up with it!

Did you by chance read the link I posted above? You never posted any system specs so I have no idea if it's relevant but is the computer compatible with Windows 10? As I said above the more details you give us the more likely it is we can help. That usually starts with complete system specs and at least some context as to the problem.....clean install, upgrade, ever worked correctly or does this every time.....you know details.

Problem started when I changed providers, had to change router. Router , Linksys 1200, had problems. Couldn't connect Ethernet, but other devices like my TV could. Very strange. Produced yellow flashing light on cable modem. Finally replaced router with Linksys 1600, green light now but computer lists it as network 2. I could only connect wirelessly before. Suspect Ethernet card on desktop computer, but Windows says computer is compatible, HP Asus 6 core 8 megs ram, realtek Ethernet card I believe. Any further specs you need ask. The whole miserable process is starting again. Don't believe I have any other choice BUT, sure as hell want to stop it from ever happening again!

I suspect your PC has a USB chipset in it which Win10 does not have built-in drivers for.
What is the full model# of the HP from the label on the backside please. Perhaps we can find the necessary drivers and get you going again.
Don't be surprised if there are no drivers for win10 but many times workarounds can be had that work well enough.

The HP recovery drive is not up to the task obviously. Now reloading Windows 10 from Microsoft site. Will be sure to make ISO recovery jump drive right away. The installer tool at the Microsoft site has an option to install ISO files to a jump drive, about 5 gigs, I assume if I change the BIOS to boot from that drive first this will allow me past the choose keyboard problem. I would appreciate any advice about this?

Just follow those instructions and that should work.
