New Graphics Card - No Signal

Hey folks, a few days ago my graphicvs card mysteriously stopped working. The fans were spinning full pelt, there was no video output and the motherboard wasn't even detecting the graphics card.

It was time for an upgrade anyway, so I've bought a shiny new GTX 1070. I've installed it, booted up and... No signal. Fans are not going haywire, LEDs are working, and there is no video output from the mobo, so it seems that the motherboard is at least detecting this card, but I have tried both HDMI ports (just a black screen) and both DP ports (message "no signal" appears on-screen, disappears, reappears, etc.)

I've cleared CMOS. That did precisely nothing. I've contacted Asus' tech support who didn't have much to suggest beyond updating my BIOS, which I seem to be unable to do: I don't have any empty flash drives, the instant flash option doesn't seem to recognise CD and the internet flash option gets to 10% then decides there's no connection (mobo is ASRock if that matters).

Any ideas?

I know it's not recommended but you could use the other PCI-E slot on your mobo? Plug your GPU into there and see if it works. That way you know if it is the PCI-E slot on the mobo that is malfunctioning. Can you tell me what model your mobo is?

I can't do this because with the graphics card plugged in I have absolutely no video signal from anywhere.

Mobo is ASRock Fatal1ty Z170 Professional Gaming i7. There are 4 PCIe slots. I can try it in another slot, but given that plugging in the card cuts the signal from the onboard, the fans aren't going berserk and the card's LEDs work, I don't think the mobo is failing to detect the card tbh.

I'm saying use another computer(working computer) to remote desktop into the computer you're not getting video on.

Ah I was wondering what RDP meant tbh. Unfortunately I've no idea how to do that, thouigh I imagine I could find something on google easily enough.

Anyway, there has been some progress, and I can't really explain it.... I did as bentejas10 suggested and tried the card in a couple of other PCIe slots. Nothing. Same result. Put it back in the original slot. Nothing. Unplugged the DP cable and put in the HDMI cable and suddely I have signal, and the card is indeed showing in device manager.

I have no idea why it suddenly started working after getting no signal the first 7 or 8 times, and I have no idea why it's working on HDMI but not on DP. I also have no idea if it will work next time I boot up, or the time after that, but I guess that's something I'll find out in due course.

Do I need to install the drivers before it'll run on DP maybe? And am I right in thinking that HDMI is iinadfequate for 1440p?

HDMI can do 1440P but a lot of monitors can't; DP is probably they way to go. I'd install the drivers and see if it creates some sort of reliability and fixes your issue.

OK I've installed the drivers, but DP still isn't working from either DP slot so I guess I'll have to use HDMI unless anyone has any idea what the problem with DP is.

On another note (not strictly related to graphics cards, admittedly) since I've received the new card today, my PC is suddenly demanding that I enter my password every time I boot up. I have followed the instructions I found online to turn this off, and it actually already IS turned off (guess I turned it off as soon as I built the rig a year ago and then forgot all about it). The login screen also seems to show two identically-named accounts, but the user accounts screen (where you go to turn the password off) only shows one. Any idea what's going on here?

Are you sure the DP cable is fully seated in the video card?
I've had the chassis metal between PCIE card slots make it so the DP cable does not fully go in.

Any way to confirm the DP cable and monitor's DP work?

No way to confirm that both cable and monitor work TODAY. I only have the one DP cable (I have ordered another from Amazon to be on the safe side as the one I have came free with the monitor so probably cheap crap) and the only other monitor I have is a few years old now and only has DVI port. However I CAN safely say that both the monitor and the DP cable worked fine with the old graphics card which gave up the ghost a few days ago.

Then again, after I took the dead card out, I was unable to get a DP signal from the motherboard's output. I read elsewhere that some motherboards just don't output through DP and thought no more of it, though on reflection why would a board have a DP port if it doesn't out through it?

As for thr cable being fully inserted, it does look like there's some excess IE I can see a bit of the connector's metal outside of the port, however it simply will not go in any further, and I've just tried inserting it into the dead card that it worked fine with, and there also some excess there (and obviously no case to get in the way in that instance).

OK well this morning I took delivery of a new DP cable AND a new GTX1070 (Amazon were very keen to send a replacement, even when I said I was happy to just try it with the new cable first). Neither work. So either it's the monitor or a setting somewhere (which would be the first I've heard of any such setting) so I'll take the monitor to a repair shop today and see what they say.

In fairness, my monitor has been a little temperamental with DP ever since I got it, refusing to do anything 2 or 3 times, but in each case resolved itself when I unplugged the cable and plugged back in. No such luck this time. If it is the case I'll have to go through AOC as Amazon's 1 month return period was over a week or 2 back. Anyone got experience of AOC's customer service and what they're like to deal with?
