Hi everyone !

I've been having some heavy performance issues with my Phenom II x4 955 CPU for quite a while now, and i can't find the source of the problem.

Basically what's been happening is that at first, i simply couldn't play demanding games with my CPU. Some games worked very fine (Battlefield 4, F1 2011..) while some other games, mostly CPU-heavy sports games like NBA 2K17 and 2k14, FIFA 17 and 15 were simply unplayable : 2K17 had audio distortion, FIFA 17 and FIFA 15 were in "slow motion" and had insane stuttering...

I managed to fix the audio stuttering problems in 2k17 and the stuttering by putting the minimum CPU state at 50% and max at 70% in the Power Management section of the control panel, but now NBA 2k17 and FIFA 17 just crash randomly, with no error messages and FIFA 15 still has some sound problems, although i can play the game. And when i try to change the CPU state (for example by putting 50%-100% instead of 50%-70%) the former problems come back...

I also took a look at the temps in CPUID HWmonitor and my CPU temps were running at 61 degrees celsius.. All of that without gaming ! This led me to think that all of my problems were temperature-related, but i'm still not quite sure.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, almost all coolers use a PWM 4-wire fan. Most 120mm AIO liquid coolers (like the Seidon 120V) also have a PWM 4-pin fan that plugs into the same header that the stock cooler's fan did. Then you connect the pump to any header that is always at full speed. Or any Molex from the PSU with an adapter.
Here's a review of the Seidon 120V: http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2744

If you want a simpler-to-mount AIO cooler, check out the Corsair H60. It has AMD an mounting arrangement that snaps onto the existing AMD retention bracket just like the stock cooler did. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181030
I have 2 of them myself.

If the core temps are 61C at idle, yes... you do have a temp issue. Have you got the 95W Ph II X4 955 or the 125W version? If the latter, are you using the stock cooler with the heat pipes or the stock cooler w/o heat pipes?
Have you replaced the thermal paste since the CPU was first installed?

Thank you for your answer.

I have the 125W version with the stock cooler and the heat pipes. The thermal paste hasn't been changed since i bought my PC 1 year and a half ago, but i just bought some and i will change it tomorrow. I checked the temps in the BIOS this time too,and the PC health status showed 80C and 60C at idle too, so i think you're right, seems like a temp issue.

I find it weird that my PC doesn't shut down with such high temps though.. The sensors work properly, so shouldn't the PC just shut down after the CPU goes above 70-80C ?

No, not until it reaches closer to 100C. Not sure of the exact shutdown temp, but it is warmer than 80C. What does happen however, is the CPU throttles to save itself if it can. Lowing its freq. when it gets beyond the safe temps, but below shut down.

You might also check to be sure the cooler's fan is running and not stopping due to a bad motor. Or is not running fast enough due to a bad motor.

CPU fan is always running, but never at full speed, except when i play demanding games.

I took the fan off my CPU and applied new thermal paste (the old one wore off), but my temps are still high.. HWmonitor says 65C and Speedfan says 70C.. I opened the case of my PC while it was running for 1-2 minutes and the CPU temp went down to 54C, and when i put the case back up it went up to 60C again.

I was thinking about changing the cooler and buying the Cooler Master Seidon 120V water cooler, but i worrying that i may run into compatibility problems with my motherboard. Does every cooler have the same power outlet ?
