So I am throwing together a new computer for school and the only part I'd like to use from my previous builds is my 16gb of ram that is ddr3. So I am buying an Asus B150 Pro d3 with an Intel Skylake G4500. The motherboard says it is compatible with ddr3 and ddr3l. But the processor says it is only compatible with ddr3l. Will my old ram still work even though it requires higher voltage? Will it just underpower my ram? I'm confused and curious! Help!

you cpu supports Supported memory: DDR3L-1333 / DDR3L-1600 / DDR4-1866 / DDR4-2133
your motherboard supports 4 x DIMM, Max. 64GB, DDR3 1866(O.C.)/1600/1333 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory

I saw the statement on the main page of the motherboard that says ddr3 and ddr3L but in specifications they seem to omit this.

odd and very good question... I would try it and check what the bios says to be honest, besides you would at worst is pump the voltage in the bios to power the DDR3 normally if it was going to under voltage it.

In the early ddr3 days some would be up as high as 1.7V stock Then intel moved to an integrated memory controller at 1.5V and recommended max 1.65V to not burn out the IMC. Now with the new chips going to DDR4 1.2V and the DDR3L 1.35V slightly more than 10% tolerance now DDR3 1.5V is overvolting the IMC again.

I'd recommend a G4560 cpu, B250 motherboard, and 2400 MHz DDR4 and sell the DDR3.
